| Marks out of 10 for the England players in their Euro 2004 qualifier against Macedonia in Skopje.David James: Now recognised as England's number one, he was unlucky with the goal. Always had to be wary with an uncertain defence in front of him. Gary Neville: Played Macedonia onside for their first goal and a rusty renewal of his right-flank partnership with Beckham while the England captain was on the right. Ashley Cole: A stray pass from Cole led to Macedonia's opener. His defensive frailties were again exposed despite more protection from Hargreaves. Sol Campbell: An embarrassing error cost England a goal and overshadowed an otherwise assured display at the heart of England's defence. John Terry: The central defender turned up at the other end to win a penalty and his partnership with Campbell became better as the game went on. David Beckham: The inspired England captain set one up and scored as well. His desire and commitment for his country was again plainly evident. Nicky Butt: Quietly effective in the midfield holding role and, despite not taking the limelight, his role was vital to the side on his return to international duty. Frank Lampard: Failed to produce the promising form he has recently shown. He seemed off the pace and was replaced by Heskey at half-time. Owen Hargreaves: Unlike several predecessors, he looked comfortable in England's troublesome left-flank position and showed plenty of energy. Michael Owen: Owen did not make the most of some early play but always provided an air of danger whenever in possession. Wayne Rooney: Showed his class by taking a chance with a sweetly struck strike despite what had been an unassured outing until then. SubstitutesEmile Heskey (replaced Frank Lampard): Produced the cushioned header for Rooney to equalise and was denied a goal by an excellent reaction save by the Macedonia keeper. Phil Neville (replaced Wayne Rooney): Came on in midfield to consolidate England's position when 2-1 up and helped limit Macedonia to a long ball game. Kieron Dyer (replaced Michael Owen): Came on with five minutes left and had little time to make an impact.
