Berti Vogts is the only foreigner to have managed Scotland
Former Scotland internationals Joe Jordan and Billy Dodds have urged the appointment of a Scot to replace sacked manager George Burley.
Burley parted company with Scotland in November following poor results and the Unirea Urziceni coach, Romanian Dan Petrescu, could be in the frame.
"I would rather we had another Scottish manager - we've got good coaches here," Dodds told BBC Scotland.
Jordan added: "Scotland went down that road before and were unsuccessful."
The only foreigner to be appointed as Scotland head coach was the German, Berti Vogts, who was also sacked after a string of results that reduced the national side to their lowest-ever Fifa world ranking.
Jordan, who played in three World Cups for Scotland and is now assistant manager to Harry Redknapp at Tottenham Hotspur, believes a Scotsman would bring more success to the role.
"I'm a litle bit old-fashioned, but I think there are plenty of candidates who are Scottish who can do the job," said Jordan.
"I've nothing against Dan, but I would like to see the side being managed by a Scotsman."
Dodds, who scored seven goals during his international career under manager Craig Brown, feels Petrescu may be trying to raise his profile by applying for the Scotland job but believes the Scottish Football Association should look closer to home in its search for the new head coach.
"It comes down to profile. Dan is working with a club at Champions League level, but the next step in his managerial career is raising his profile," said Dodds.
"He can only make Scotland better, which will look good for him - and it's a bigger step to manage at a higher level, but we've got to make sure we're looking at everybody, because we're at crisis point with Scotland.
"We have to give everybody the opportunity and Dan is just another candidate, but he'll be looking at all those aspects and thinking it's the perfect job for him."
The former Rangers striker also urged the SFA to speed up the process of selecting candidates and make an appointment quickly to give the new manager time to settle in, indicating a personal preference for the Dundee United manager Craig Levein to be handed the job.
"The SFA have got to get the process going soon, as the draw for the European Championship is coming soon and I think the time frame is narrowing," said Dodds.
"Dan won't be the first candidate - they'll also look at other people.
"I've said all along that Craig Levein fits the bill. Without being disrespectful to Dundee United, the next step to manage at a higher level is the Scotland job.
"Craig probably wants to go back down to England, so we might lose him. But, at the end of it all, Scotland will be playing well again, which is the most important thing."
Hearts manager Csaba Laszlo said he would be open to talks with the SFA about the Scotland job, while former Celtic midfielder John Collins and the former Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood have also expressed an interest.
