Scots in third tier for Euro draw

Scotland manager George Burley
Burley's side had a disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign

Scotland are among the third seeds in Uefa's interim rankings for February's European Championship qualifying draw.

The Scots, second seeds for their unsuccessful World Cup qualification bid, sit above Northern Ireland and Austria at the bottom of the third pot.

Both countries and Latvia would have to overtake Scotland in Uefa's complicated points system for George Burley's men to drop further down the seeding.

However, Scotland look assured of their current position.

Northern Ireland are away to the Czech Republic in their solitary remaining fixture on Wednesday, while Latvia are away to Greece on Saturday.

The draw for the qualifying tournament will be held in Warsaw on 7 February.

With six groups of six teams and three of five, only the table-toppers will be guaranteed a place in the Euro 2012 finals alongside co-hosts Poland and Ukraine.

The best runner-up will also go through, with the eight other second-placed sides going into the play-offs.

Israel, Republic of Ireland, Bulgaria, Finland, Norway and Bosnia-Herzegovina currently occupy the pot three places above Scotland, meaning Burley's men would not face them if the positions remain unaffected.

The new ranking system is based on performances in the World Cup qualifiers, Euro 2008 and, to a lesser extent, the 2006 World Cup.
