George Burley says Scotland are gunning for victory in Oslo

Scotland manager George Burley says six points from their final three World Cup qualifying games should be enough to clinch a play-off place.

The Scots, who are second in Group 9, face Norway in Oslo on Wednesday.

"We need a couple of wins to get us there. We face a difficult away game in Norway and then two home games," Burley told BBC Scotland.

"We're second at the moment. Before we started (the campaign) I think we would've taken that."

Scotland follow up their trip to Olso with home games against Macedonia and group winners Netherlands early next month.

Burley is under no illusions about the task his side face, but believes they can book their place in the finals in South Africa next summer.

"Holland are a quality side; one of the top six countries the world," he said. "They've won the group, we're in second. We're going to play Norway, who you would think would've been strong challengers, but they're in last position at the moment.

Norway's going to be a tough game, if we can get the right result it would be tremendous

"It's all to play for with three games left. Where we finish is what counts, but at this moment in time we're doing okay.

"If we got a win there it would cement our position in second place and would knock Norway out of the running.

"But Norway's going to be a tough game, if we can get the right result it would be tremendous."

Burley said managing the national side was an honour and that the opportunity had come at the right time of his career.

"It's been great; and to manage your country, it doesn't get any better. To try to take your country to a World Cup doesn't get any bigger.

MY SPORT: DEBATE

"I'm enjoying it - there have been ups and downs, and I'm sure there'll be plenty more. I'm beginning to form my own squad and there are young players coming into the side.

"I felt against Iceland that our shape and everything coming together was right. We've got 10 players coming back into the squad; there's competition for places but we're not inundated with the top quality players we had 20 or 30 years ago."

Asked how he coped under the media spotlight, Burley said: "Somebody described the national job as being like a volcano; it's very quiet for long periods then it gets bigger and erupts. Then it slowly goes down.

"For me, the biggest down is not having the day-to-day involvement on the training pitch. That's what I really miss because that's what I really enjoyed, being out on that training pitch."
