After a slow start in friendlies, the 2-1 win over Ukraine on 1 April put them five points clear at the top of World Cup qualifying group six.
James added: "I believe it's a very Italian style which Mr Capello enforces. People have mentioned the fact that the whole squad sit down for a meal and won't leave until the last person has finished.
"That's good. It shows respect for everyone else at the table. It is a little rule which at first you question but in practice it bonds the team. Before, people would just pop down to dinner for five minutes and then go back to their rooms.
"We have gone into matches with a gameplan and when you come off the field and you have the victory, you feel everything has been justified."
We suffered with injuries in important games

On the same programme, former national coach McClaren, now in charge of Dutch side FC Twente, admitted he rarely watches England matches.
He also explained that injuries and suspensions had cost him dear in his time in charge, which ended with dismissal in November 2007.
"I tend to be looking at the other games now. At England, the players had the ability, the only thing was injuries and suspensions. A lack of fresh players costs you in tournaments and that is what happened.
"We suffered with injuries in very important games, especially towards the end."
