Managers question Boyd decision

Rangers striker Kris Boyd
Boyd caused controversy and debate with his decision

Top managers have expressed disbelief at Kris Boyd's decision to turn his back on Scotland under George Burley.

The Rangers striker made his vow after again being left on the bench for Saturday's 0-0 draw with Norway.

Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood said: "I don't know the full situation, but I do suspect that Kris will have big regrets about it."

Motherwell boss Mark McGhee said that the chance to play for your country was not something you could turn down.

"I personally believe it's not something you have a choice about," he said.

"It's a bit like conscription. If your country calls you to go to war, you can't say 'no, I'm withdrawing my services'. You would get shot."

McGhee was so frustrated at being hauled off after scoring in an international clash with England that he felt like "kicking" Scotland manager Jock Stein, so he can empathise with Boyd's frustration at not getting a game for his country.

The former Hamburg and Celtic striker won only four Scotland caps, netting twice, despite his goalscoring exploits for the Aberdeen side that won championships and European trophies.

I can't understand why folk outwith football and folk that don't know Kris are giving him dog's abuse for it

Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor

His last international was a 1984 British Championship clash at Hampden Park, when his header earned Scotland a 1-1 draw against England.

"I never played in a World Cup or European Championship, I got four caps for Scotland," said McGhee.

"My last cap was against England, a game in which I scored.

"I was taken off with 20 minutes to go and, quite honestly, I could have kicked big Jock in the b**** for taking me off. I was gutted.

"The following midweek, we played France in Marseille and I wasn't even sub. Imagine how I felt.

"But it never even occurred to me to say I would never play for Scotland again."

McGhee admits that Boyd - who played just 28 minutes under Burley - is a big loss to the country's World Cup campaign.

"By the same token, I fully understand Kris' frustrations and disappointment in not getting on against Norway," said McGhee, who was interviewed by the Scottish Football Association before Burley was appointed in January.

"I think it's a shame because he is a great asset and I think he is going to be a miss.

"There is no doubt in my mind that somewhere along this line, Kris Boyd would have got a winning goal for Scotland.

"I think the likelihood is Kris Boyd will finish top scorer in the SPL this year and he's not going to be available for Scotland."

Meanwhile, Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor called into question Burley's explanation of why he did not field Boyd - because he was not a regular starter with his club.

"Obviously, George Burley talked about the first-team situation at Rangers," said McGregor.

"So then you've got an argument - why is he picking him in the Scotland squad?

"I can't understand why folk outwith football and folk that don't know Kris are giving him dog's abuse for it.

"Whether he regrets it, I don't think he will.

"He's not quitting Scotland; he's only quitting under George Burley.

"So I don't think he's turned his back on his country, which a lot of folk are saying."
