Nigel Worthington is frustrated that Northern Ireland played the best football but still lost 2-0 to SLovenia at the weekend.
Northern Ireland boss Nigel Worthington was happy with his side's display despite losing 2-0 to Slovenia in the 2010 World Cup qualifier in Maribor.
"It was a bitter blow, but I've been in the game long enough to know that these things happen," said Worthington.
"I thought the players were superb with their energy and commitment.
"We played some good football and showed a tremendous work ethic, but the rub of the green is not with us. We have got to make things happen."
Northern Ireland are fifth in Group Three after picking up just one point from their opening three qualifiers.
"It is clear we are playing catch-up in the group, but I can see a lot of positives," added Worthington after watching his side concede two goals in the space of a minute in the final 10 minutes of the match.
"We created some decent chances - and if we can start taking them, we will pick up points.
"We have played three games, conceded four goals - but Maik Taylor has not had a save to make."
"The players are very down in the dressing room, as you would expect, but I was very proud of their performance.
"We are all terribly disappointed, because for 84 minutes we were in control of the situation. Then they scored twice.
"It was a kick in the teeth. At the moment, the players are not getting their just rewards for all the hard work they are putting into training and in matches."
Manchester United defender Jonny Evans will sit out Wednesday's game against San Marino, after picking up his second yellow card of the campaign.
Worthington said: "Jonny was just frustrated. It means we will have to re-adjust against San Marino.
"It won't be as easy as people expect, and I'll just be happy if we win 1-0 and get three points on the board."
