Man Utd team-mates Darren Fletcher and Ronaldo could be in opposition
Scotland are in talks with Portugal over a friendly international at Hampden Park on 19 November.
But the Scottish Football Association is being made to wait amid fears that Portugal have another option in the pipeline for that date.
If the Portuguese decide against the Hampden game, the Scots could turn to Poland to fill the fixture.
The SFA had originally planned to play Argentina, but it pulled out after fan opposition to proposed ticket prices.
Portugal lost 3-2 to Denmark in their World Cup qualifying group in midweek, while Poland beat San Marino 2-0.
The Poles, for whom Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc was dropped for disciplinary reasons, top Group Three, equal on points with Slovenia, who held them to a 1-1 draw in Warsaw four days earlier.
Portugal, currently without injured Manchester United midfielder Cristiano Ronaldo, are fourth in Group One, having beaten Malta 4-0 in their earlier game.
Scotland, who hope to confirm the Portugal friendly this week, are third in Group Nine following a 1-0 defeat in Macedonia and a 2-1 victory away to Iceland.
