Myhill proud to answer Wales call

The first name on Myhill's birth certificate is not Boaz but Glyn

Wales' new squad goalkeeper Boaz Myhill says he is delighted with the chance to prove his loyalty to the country.

The Hull City stopper, 25, was born in California, but has a British passport.

Despite having played for England Youth and being eligible for any of the home countries, Myhill says he always felt the Welsh connection was strong.

"People call me American, but my mother was born in Llangollen and I lived my life around the Welsh border until joining Aston Villa at 16," he said.

"I'm glad that the Welsh link has come to fruition. I was asked to join a squad a few years ago, but at the time I'd just had a baby daughter and my form wasn't what it is now.

"This is a step up to a bigger stage and I had to be ready. If I enjoy the privilege of getting a cap it will be such a proud day for me and my entire family."

The call-up of Myhill for Wednesday's friendly in Luxembourg would have been less of a surprise if he went by the first name on his birth certificate, Glyn.

"Mum and Dad originally intended to call me Boaz," said Myhill, who spent just the first year of his life in his birthplace of San Francisco before returning to the UK.

"They were travelling around Israel where a young boy who helped carry their bag was called it - they liked him and the name.

"But when I was about to be born in America my aunty and uncle came to visit, and they said that the name would scar me for life!

"Glyn was my mother's brother's name and that's what went on my birth certificate.

"But I think my parents always regretted it, and they've called me Boaz for the rest of my life.

"It sticks out, but I don't mind it - there aren't many of us around, and people remember me, for good or ill."

Wayne Hennessey is Wales' first-choice goalkeeper

Myhill says he knows he faces a stiff challenge to rise above Wayne Hennessey and Lewis Price in the Wales pecking order.

"They are both good keepers but that's football, nothing gets handed to you on a plate," he told BBC Sport Wales.

"Hull still have a good chance of getting promotion to the Premiership this season and that could help my chances.

"I'm just with Wales to try and impress, after that it's all down to the manager."

But if he is to win a permanent place in the Wales squad, one area Myhill will have to improve upon is his singing.

"My Mum tried to help me out with the Welsh national anthem," he said. "But I think I will have to hum it this time and learn it for the next!"
