Steve Finnan made 50 appearances for the Republic of Ireland |
Liverpool and Republic of Ireland defender Steve Finnan has announced his retirement from international football. The 31-year-old made his debut in 2000 and played in 50 Republic matches.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Republic team, with the World Cup in 2002 being the highlight of my international career," said Finnan.
"There will be a new manager coming in soon who will have his own ideas for the future with younger players having the chance to stake their claim."
Finnan told the Liverpool website he felt it was the right time to step down as he would be 34 when the next World Cup finals came around.
