Van Basten is pleased with Holland's selection of opponents |
Coach Marco van Basten is confident Holland can reach the 2010 World Cup finals after being drawn with Scotland, Norway, Macedonia and Iceland. "Only Macedonia don't play a physical game," van Basten told AD Sportwereld. "We can beat the other teams by playing our football.
"We have been placed in groups with teams from Eastern Europe in recent years and they are very technical.
"Now we have to go north which suits us, although we must not be arrogant."
Van Basten has earmarked Scotland as the biggest threat, despite a 6-0 win in Amsterdam when the teams last met.
That was in a play-off for the 2004 European Championships and followed a 1-0 victory for Scotland at Hampden.
"I rank Scotland higher than when we played them in the play-offs," he added.
"Scotland has two clubs in the Champions League with many Scottish players.
"That says something. Our club football clearly isn't that good at the moment."
The Dutch squad is full of promising young players and van Basten believes his team can only get better.
"We started three years ago with many new players and had to build a new Dutch team," he said.
"The goal was Euro 2008, we agreed on that then.
"We then qualified reasonably easily for the World Cup. The race towards Euro 2008 was more difficult but we are on course.
"We have good players. Players like Robin van Persie, Wesley Sneijder and Rafael van der Vaart can seize the opportunity in the summer, but they can be at their strongest in South Africa two years later."
Meanwhile, Norway boss Age Hareide is excited at the prospect of a trip to Glasgow and believes his team and the Scots will battle it out for second place.
"Hampden is the best arena in Europe - maybe the best in the world," he said.
"The atmosphere is always fantastic there and my players will be lifted by that.
"For a team which starts as third seeds, being drawn against Scotland is good for us.
"We always enjoy our games against them and there is never much between us."
Iceland boss Olafur Johannesson is aiming for an upset against the Scots.
"We have a chance of achieving a result against Scotland, especially in Reykjavik," he said.
"I am aware of James McFadden and, of course, the captain Barry Ferguson is a very good player.
"But we also have good players, like Eidur Gudjohnsen."
