Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has been called up to the Northern Ireland squad for the Euro 2008 qualifiers against Denmark and Spain.

Evans was a surprise omission from the original squad but he has been drafted in by manager Nigel Worthington after George McCartney's withdrawal.

McCartney suffered an ankle injury in West Ham's win over Derby on Saturday.

Northern Ireland face Denmark at Windsor Park on Saturday and take on Spain in Las Palmas four days later.

Worthington's side go into the double-header five points behind Spain and a further point adrift of Group F leaders Sweden.

Northern Ireland and Denmark are level on 17 points and both need to win their remaining two games and hope other results go their way to have a chance of qualifying.
