Hunt admitted his performance was below par against Cyprus |
Republic of Ireland forward Stephen Hunt says the players must take some of the blame for Steve Staunton's fate. Staunton's managerial reign came to end on Tuesday after a string of poor performances in Euro 2008 qualifying.
"It's disappointing. We have to take some of the responsibility," Reading winger Hunt told BBC Radio 5 Live.
"I didn't play that well in my last game. I could have helped a bit more with my performance, but ultimately the manager is responsible for the team."
The 1-1 home draw with Cyprus was the final straw for the Football Association of Ireland and Staunton's reign ended after just 21 months.
"The players crossed the line and didn't perform," Hunt continued.

"It's not always the manager's fault. Players have bad games and some of us certainly did in the last game against Cyprus.
"Results are what determines where managers go and results haven't been good."
Hunt, though, insisted Staunton did not deserve pity.
"It's not a hard life to have - especially an international manager, it's a great life," said the 26-year-old.
"I'm sure he'll get the next two years of his contract paid up and it's a job well paid.
"But you have to take the criticism, and he has done to be fair. He took it on the chin and he'll learn from it I suppose as all the players will."

David O'Leary has emerged as the favourite to succeed Staunton, with Philippe Troussier and Liam Brady also in the frame.
Of ex-Leeds boss O'Leary, Hunt said: "I suppose he would be a good choice. He's got plenty of experience. He's managed in the Premier League.
"We need a strong-minded manager - whether he's Irish, English or from another country."
