Republic of Ireland manager Steve Staunton has handed Liam Miller another crack at the international big-time.
The Republic boss has claimed the midfielder "has not fulfilled his potential" and initially omitted him from the party for the next two games.
The absence of Stephen Ireland and an injury worry over Andy Reid may give the midfielder his chance to shine.
"I've always liked Liam and he did okay for Sunderland at Manchester United when he had the chance," said Staunton.
"He has got back into the Sunderland side in the last couple of games and is getting back in the swing of things.
"It's going to take a while for him, but we need him playing regularly.
"He is at a good age, and the more games he plays for Sunderland then the better for everyone."
Sunderland boss Roy Keane, speaking after Miller's excellent display in Sunday's 3-2 defeat at Arsenal, believes the former Celtic player could soon be a starter for his country.
"He was brilliant against Arsenal with his passing and movement," said Keane.
"That is what Liam is capable of. We just want to see that on a more
consistent basis.
"Of course, to be a top player you have to do it week in and week out. That is
the challenge for Liam and I have spoken to him about it.
"If he is doing that, and playing like he did at Arsenal, then he should not
just be in the squad, he should be in the starting XI and dictating games for
Ireland."
