Hiddink had been linked with a switch to both England and Chelsea

The Dutchman was linked to the post last summer but is now in charge of the Russia side who face England at Wembley in Wednesday's Euro 2008 qualifier.

Hiddink said: "There was a slight approach but I was already in contact with the Russian federation.

"I hadn't signed a contract with them but I gave them my word and I always stick to my word. I don't regret it."

Hiddink had been tipped to succeed Eriksson last April but at the time his agent said the Football Association had not followed up their initial approach.

The former Australia and South Korea coach, explained the Russian federation were able to make him a definite offer.

"My agent said there was a more firm contact from the Russian side," the 60-year-old said.

"It was very honourable at that time to hear that but I had given my word to the Russian federation."

Hiddink is now preparing to guide Russia against England in their crucial Group D qualifier.

Steve McClaren's England need to win to climb above Russia and into second in the table, and Hiddink is not underestimating the home side.

"We hope to get a result but we know that England have a strong squad," Hiddink said.

"If you manage not to give opportunities to Israel then you are doing well. I consider England well organised and experienced."

And even if Hiddink gets the result he is looking for against England, he remains convinced that McClaren's job is not in immediate danger.

If the Russians did win they would move four points ahead of England, who still have to go to Moscow on 17 October.

He said: "Of course we are coming here to get a result but what the consequences of that will be I don't know. That's not up to me.

"But I don't think there won't be any decision whatever the result might be on Wednesday. After that there are three games to go."
