Malpas spent just one season in charge at Motherwell |
Former Motherwell manager Maurice Malpas will lead Scotland for their Under-21 European Championship qualifiers against Finland and Denmark. Malpas steps up following Archie Knox's decision to leave his post as the Scottish FA's national youth teams coach to take up a job at Bolton.
Calum Elliot, Andrew Considine and Ryan O'Leary miss Saturday's tie in Finland.
However, the trio will be reassessed before next Wednesday's home clash with Denmark at East End Park.
Defenders Paul Dixon, Tom Scobbie and Garry Kenneth have been drafted in for the trip to Vaasa.
A good start to the campaign could see Malpas offered a permanent post and the former international defender would welcome such a move.
"I have done this for 10 years and I have managed this team a couple of times before," he said.
"I have spoken to (SFA chief executive) Gordon Smith and said I would be interested.
"I believe I have got something to give because I have been through it - international football and European football - and I know what is expected."
Malpas will have new Rangers signing Steven Naismith as his captain.
The ex-Kilmarnock forward made his full Scotland debut against the Faroe Islands in June but returned to the Under-21s in last month's 1-0 friendly win over the Czech Republic.
