Campbell has not started a senior international since 2005

Campbell, 32, has not started a senior England match since 2005 but McClaren is short on numbers in defence.

"If it comes I will take my chances," Campbell told BBC 5live's Sportsweek.

"I have played a long time for my country. Of course I would love the chance to do it again. I will have to wait and see if it happens."

John Terry, Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate are all set to miss the forthcoming friendly with Germany on 22 August, while Jamie Carragher has retired from international football.

McClaren hinted last week that Campbell is in line for a recall. He said: "It would be silly and foolish of me to dismiss either Sol or Portsmouth keeper David James. Last season was a very good one for Sol."

The last of Campbell's 69 England caps came as a substitute against Sweden in the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

And Campbell, speaking about renewed speculation that he might return to the England fold, stated: "I am thrilled but until I am there and it is happening I'm not going to get too excited.

"I'm just going to concentrate on my game and see what I can do. That is the main thing - whatever comes after that comes after that.

"If there are no games I'll just get on with the season. If it is one game, good, if it is 15 games, fantastic."

Campbell, meanwhile, suggested that he might end his career by playing Major League Soccer in the United States.

"I probably will do my coaching badges and have those in my locker," he added.
