Georgia coach Toppmoller felt Scotland were lucky at Hampden |
Georgia coach Klaus Toppmoller admits their 2-1 defeat against Scotland at Hampden has effectively ended their hopes of Euro 2008 qualification. The former Bayer Leverkusen manager is now backing Scotland - who face Italy in Bari on Wednesday - to book their place at next summer's finals.
He said: "It's a very important game for Scotland in Italy on Wednesday.
"If they can get a draw, then they have a good chance to win the group and go to the European Championships."
Toppmoller was crestfallen after watching Scots' substitute Craig Beattie pounce to fire home an 88th-minute winner to keep Alex McLeish's side on track.
And he added: "Scotland were very lucky today, and as they missed some key players I felt we had a chance to take a point from the game.
"Winning the home games is important, and, if Scotland can do that, as well as take a point in Italy and Georgia, then they would be real favourites to qualify.
"Our hopes are finished now, we are realistic, and we know France, Italy and Scotland are the favourites.
"But we will try to do well against France, Italy and Ukraine and help Scotland."
