Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has come to the defence of under-fire England boss Steve McClaren. "I have no doubts about his ability, absolutely none," said Ferguson, after McClaren was heavily criticised following the 0-1 defeat to Spain.
"He does not have a great deal of experience in terms of top management.
"But he has the experience of being Sven-Goran Eriksson's assistant and the FA has given the job to a man with great potential," added Ferguson.
England have failed to win a game under McClaren in their last four games, prompting a media backlash just over six months after he took over from Eriksson.
Ferguson said: "I don't see how the way the media are handling this situation can elicit any kind of positive response.
"But you might regret it 10 years time because Steve could go back into club football and do exceptionally well because he will have more experience."
McClaren was Ferguson's assistant at Old Trafford for two and a half years, a relationship that began during the 1999 treble-winning campaign.
