Butcher doubts over McClaren job

Butcher (left) doubts McClaren's future as England boss
Ex-England skipper Terry Butcher does not think Steve McClaren will be coach of the national side in two years.

McClaren is facing mounting pressure after a 0-0 draw at home to Macedonia and a 2-0 defeat in Croatia.

Butcher told BBC Radio Five Live: "I've said it all along there is a certain Arsene Wenger in the background that might fancy a crack at it.

"That came out with the Luis Felipe Scolari fiasco a few months ago and I think he might fancy it as well."

Portugal boss Scolari was interviewed for the England job before McClaren's appointment but talks broke down because the former Brazil coach did not want the appointment confirmed before the World Cup finals.

The FA confirmed it had spoken with Wenger about the job but the Arsenal boss was not interested.

But Butcher added: "I think there might be better candidates that might put themselves to the fore."

A poll commissioned by BBC Five Live Breakfast found most England fans do not believe McClaren is the right man for the job.

Of the 321 respondents - sample members of 'Englandfans, the official England Supporters' Club' - 67% said they did not think he was right for the role.

Butcher added: "I think if you'd asked all the fans a day after Steve McClaren's appointment was announced you'd have had the same result.

"He wasn't the automatic choice of many people. He was the safe choice of the FA and results haven't gone their way.

"I don't think there were many other candidates that stood out and hit you. If it had been Sam Allardyce or Alan Curbishley the fans would still be having their doubts.

"You only have to look at Martin O'Neill and what he has done at Aston Villa. You have to say perhaps they made the wrong choice but they are stuck with McClaren and have to get on with it.

"That result [in Croatia] is going to haunt him for a while, especially with the way it was conducted with the change of system and the unfortunate goal with Robinson. It did leave a really horrible taste in the mouth."

To bring [Beckham] back is a backwards step and admitting failure straight away

In a separate question, 70% thought former England captain David Beckham should be recalled to the squad.

But Butcher, who has been critical of Beckham's England performances in the past, says that would be a mistake.

He said: "Steve took over and axed David Beckham which was a bold move. To bring him back, for me, that is a backwards step and admitting failure straight away.

"It is down to the players to dig England out of this hole.

"We've had debacles like this in the past all too frequently and we do seem to bounce back. They are a resilient lot and they have certainly got to pull some results out of the hat now.

"When it comes to competitive games it is a long time to wait, but this friendly in Holland is another potential banana skin and it could be more misery heaped on McClaren in that.

"He says he wants to experiment and bring some players through from the Under-21s and it seems the excuses are already there."

The poll quizzed 1,000 members of the Englandfans supporters' club.

The vast majority - if not all of the respondents - travelled to Zagreb to watch England's recent 2-0 Euro 2008 qualifying defeat by Croatia.

England are top of Group E but drew 0-0 at home to Macedonia four days before losing to Croatia and McClaren was heavily criticised for the below-par performances.

McClaren dropped Beckham when he named his first squad for the friendly against Greece in August and has since refused to recall him.
