Lafferty in NI qualifiers squad
Kyle Lafferty of Northern Ireland
Kyle Lafferty celebrates his goal against Finland
Burnley's Kyle Lafferty hopes to make his competitive Northern Ireland debut after being named in the squad for the Euro qualifiers with Iceland and Spain.

The 18-year-old striker scored his first international goal in the 2-1 friendly win over Finland on 16 August.

Leicester City defender Gareth McAuley is recalled to the 21-man panel while Sheffield Wednesday winger Chris Brunt is promoted from the Under-21s.

N Ireland are at home to Iceland on 2 September and Spain four days later.

Manager Lawrie Sanchez has also selected three goalkeepers for the first time - Wrexham's Michael Ingham is named along with Maik Taylor and Roy Carroll.

There is no place in Sanchez's squad for strikers Andy Kirk, Dean Shiels and Peter Thompson.

Birmingham City captain Damien Johnson is suspended for both qualifiers after being dismissed against Austria in the World Cup qualifying series.

Under Sammy McIlroy, Northern Ireland failed to win a game in their Euro 2004 qualifying campaign.

But Sanchez expects his side to be competitive in their group this time.

"Nothing will be decided on the first match but we want to get off to a good start," said the NI boss.

"It is a campaign of 12 games and there will be a down somewhere along the way.

"I hope there are more highs than lows and that we can do something in this group.

"Iceland may be below us in the rankings but they drew with Spain in their last friendly."

Northern Ireland squad to play Iceland and Spain:

Goalkeepers - Maik Taylor (Birmingham City), Roy Carroll (West Ham United), Michael Ingham (Wrexham)
Defenders - Tony Capaldi (Plymouth Argyle), Stephen Craigan (Motherwell), Chris Baird (Southampton), Aaron Hughes (Aston Villa), Michael Duff (Burnley), Gareth McAuley (Leicester City)
Midfielders - Grant McCann (Cheltenham Town), Steve Davis (Aston Villa), Stuart Elliott (Hull City), Ivan Sproule (Hibernian), Keith Gillespie (Sheffield Utd), Sammy Clingan (Nottingham Forest), Chris Brunt (Sheffield Wednesday)
Forwards - Warren Feeney (Luton Town), James Quinn (Northampton Town), David Healy (Leeds Utd), Kyle Lafferty (Burnley), Steve Jones (Burnley)
