Steve Davis enjoyed his first game as Northern Ireland skipper |
Aston Villa ace Steve Davis said it was "brilliant" to captain Northern Ireland for the first time in Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Uruguay in New Jersey. "It was a really proud moment for me," the midfielder told BBC Sport.
"It is something I had never really thought about before but Lawrie (Sanchez) decided to give it to me.
"I just tried to play my normal game - I was a bit disappointed with my performance in the first half but did a bit better in the second half."
He added: "We can take lots of positives from the game.
"We had as many chances as Uruguay but didn't take them and it took a spectacular goal to separate the teams."
Northern Ireland boss Sanchez heaped praise on the five players who made their debut - Sean Webb, Jeff Hughes, Mark Hughes, Sammy Clingan and Kyle Lafferty.
"To get so many young lads on the field and still look reasonably comfortable is a credit to them," he said.
"We competed, passed the ball well and caused them problems at set-pieces.
"Sammy Clingan played really well in the midfield along Steven Davis.
"All of them have given something different that we could use in the future."
"One or two of them will come into the squad for the Europeans."
Fabian Etoyanoff's goal in the 33rd minute gave Oscar Tabarez a winning debut since being reappointed as coach of Uruguay in March.
Northern Ireland will take on Romania in the second and final game of their US tour in Chicago on Friday night.
