McNamara to play on for Scotland
Jackie McNamara in action for Scotland
McNamara injured a knee ligament in training
Scotland midfielder Jackie McNamara has made it clear he will not be retiring from international football.

The 32-year-old hinted last September that he would retire at the end of the World Cup qualifying campaign.

McNamara is now close to a comeback after six months out with a knee injury and told The Scotsman: "Walter Smith said he was keen for me to play on.

"He has been very supportive. I now feel I'd like to play my part in the European qualifiers."

McNamara left Celtic after 10 years at Parkhead last summer, joining Championship side Wolves.

He had first hinted he would retire from international football ahead of Scotland's 2-1 win over Norway last September.

But a freak training ground incident with his new club left McNamara with a cruciate knee ligament injury.

"When I got the injury, Walter was one of the first people on the phone to me," added McNamara.

"Walter showed great understanding of why I had said what I did about possibly stepping away from the international team."
