Jamie Smith was in the squad for the first time since 2003 |
Aberdeen's top scorer, Jamie Smith, has withdrawn from the Scotland squad to play Switzerland only hours after being named in Walter Smith's squad. The 25-year-old picked up a hamstring injury against Falkirk on Saturday.
An SFA spokesman said: "It is unusual for someone to call off on the day the squad is announced. It is unfortunate, but there will be no replacement."
There were recalls for the 1 March game at Hampden for Everton's Gary Naysmith and Wigan Athletic's Gary Teale.
But there is no place for in-form Rangers winger Chris Burke.
And striker Kris Boyd continues to be overlooked by manager Smith despite consolidating his place at the top of the Scottish Premier League scoring charts since his move from Kilmarnock to Ibrox.
Smith said: "Both players have been doing very well this season, but the guys in the squad have been doing well for a longer period and didn't deserve to be dropped.
"It was just a bit early for them, but they are in our thoughts and I've no doubts that they will get an opportunity sooner rather than later."
Naysmith has been recalled to the Scotland squad despite the left-back having only played once for Everton's first-team after long-term injury.
He has not featured for his country since Smith's first game in charge against Italy in March.
"It's nice to see him back," said the manager. "He's been back for a few weeks now, although he's not been featuring in the starting XI for Everton.
"It's a position in which we are not that well endowed with players, so it will give him an opportunity to come back and get involved in the squad."
Naysmith's fellow 27-year-old, Teale, has been rewarded for Wigan Athletic's fine first season in the Premiership with a call-up for the friendly against Switzerland.
The midfielder has played his part for a Wigan side that have surprised many by sitting eighth in England's top division.
Teale, who began his career with Clydebank, has helped Wigan win two promotions since moving to England from Ayr United for 200,000 in 2001.
He was called up by previous Scotland manager Berti Vogts but was an unused substitute in a 4-0 defeat by Wales in February 2004.
"I had him in the Future squad against Poland at Kilmarnock," said Smith.
"He's a wide-midfield player who can help us defensively and offensively."
