Capello has also managed AC Milan, Real Madrid and Roma |
The Football Association has insisted it has not approached anyone about becoming the new England coach. Italian newspapers claimed Juventus coach Fabio Capello has been offered the chance to succeed Sven-Goran Eriksson, who is leaving in the summer.
But an FA statement said: "There have been no approaches made by the FA to any individuals or clubs regarding the recruitment of the next England coach.
"Nobody has been authorised to lead any formal approaches."
The newspapers have been full of speculation about the job since Eriksson announced that he would be standing down after this summer's World Cup.
Ex-Celtic boss Martin O'Neill, Manchester City's Stuart Pearce and Sam Allardyce of Bolton have also been heavily tipped for the post.
But the FA said that the process to find a successor to the Swede will not begin until a meeting later this month.
The FA statement added: "At a meeting on 27 February the FA board will consider proposals made by the three men appointed to formulate the recruitment process - FA chief executive Brian Barwick, international committee chairman Noel White and international committee vice-chairman Dave Richards.
"This meeting is expected to agree the process not identify a list of candidates for the job.
"We should also be clear that the FA remains committed to appointing the best man for the job. To achieve this it is important that we take the necessary time to identify this person.
"In doing so we are determined that this recruitment process does not disrupt or interfere with Sven-Goran Eriksson's preparation for the World Cup."
FA spokesman Adrian Bevington stressed that if the successor is appointed before the World Cup he will not be involved in Germany.
He said: "Sven and Brian Barwick have said this is Sven's squad, it's his backroom staff, his set of players and the pinnacle of his reign and he would prefer to manage the squad in Germany with that group around him.
"That's certainly how it will pan out in the summer."
