Staunton and Robson wave an Ireland scarf at their news conference |
New Republic of Ireland boss Steve Staunton has admitted he has to prove the sceptics wrong as he embarks on his first managerial role. Staunton has enlisted former England manager Sir Bobby Robson to bring experience to the new set-up.
"There are always going to be doubters because of my age and inexperience," said the Republic's most-capped player.
"That is why I have gone for the team I have. But I am the boss and whatever I say goes. The buck stops with me."
Former Liverpool, Aston Villa and Walsall defender Staunton was officially paraded in front of the media at a news conference in Dublin's Mansion House on Monday morning.
Along with Robson, he was flanked by coach Kevin McDonald and goalkeeping coach Alan Kelly.
The new managerial team's first match will be a friendly against Sweden on 1 March.
The Republic will be among the fourth seeds for the European Championship qualifiers, the draw for which takes place on 27 January.
"Our seeding means we will be up against some seriously good, and in some cases, world-class opposition," said Staunton.
"But we have talented players and will not shirk the challenge."
Robson said he had received several job offers since being sacked by Newcastle United.
"I always knew there was another job in me. I turned some jobs down in the last year because they were not quite right for me," said Robson.
"But this is the highest level. There will be difficult moments and I want to help guide Steve through them. I will do whatever he asks me to."
