Former Republic of Ireland boss Brian Kerr has applied to become the next manager of South Africa. Romanian Ted Dumitru has been in temporary charge of the 2010 World Cup hosts since the resignation of Stuart Baxter last month.
Dumitru will be in charge of the team for the African Nations Cup in February but could be replaced after that.
"Brian has applied. He is interested in the job," Kerr's agent Fintan Drury told the Irish Times.
It is understood that there have been more than 40 applicants for the South African job.
Last month, Kerr said that he didn't expect to work in a football job in Ireland again.
Kerr's contract as Republic of Ireland boss wasn't renewed in October after the team failed to qualify for next year's World Cup finals.
South Africa also failed to qualify for the finals in Germany.
