Paul Robinson: Made several stunning saves in both halves, cannot be faulted for either of the goals and assured handling too.

Luke Young: Looked a touch out of his depth against real quality attacking players, though harshly booked in the first half.

Wayne Bridge: Off the pace from the start and at fault for the first goal, not ready for such a huge game after so long out with injury.

John Terry: Not at his commanding best, Terry had a ding-dong battle with Chelsea team-mate Hernan Crespo.

Rio Ferdinand: Like Terry, found the going tough under severe examination, but refused to roll over and fought for every ball.

Ledley King: A good shield for the back four and always involved, but should not be relied upon to play 40-yard passes.

David Beckham: Another workaholic 90 minutes from the skipper in his 50th game as captain and some great crossfield passes thrown in.

Steven Gerrard: Much-improved display in an England shirt for Gerrard, some great runs and passes and a real awareness of his position.

Frank Lampard: Struggled to stamp his usual authority on the game, flashed a header and a left-foot shot wide but passing a touch below-par.

Wayne Rooney:STAR MAN Good link-up with players around him, deserved a goal and tormented the Argentines late on as he orchestrated the win.

Michael Owen: Hardly noticeable until the end, it was truly classic Owen to pop up with two poachers efforts at the death.

Sven-Goran Eriksson: Did not get too much wrong tactically and kept changes to a minimum for once in a friendly, using them well at the end.

Paul Konchesky (Bridge, 45 mins): Settled quickly but needs to be more careful with his passing.

Joe Cole (King, 58 mins): Got into the game immediately but was starved of possession late on.

Peter Crouch (Young, 81 mins): His mere presence caused discomfort in the Argentine defence.
