Dario Rodriguez's first-half goal gave Uruguay a narrow advantage after the first leg of their World Cup play-off. Rodriguez headed home in the 35th minute but Uruguay missed several opportunities to make the tie safe.
Middlesbrough goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer kept Australia in it, with a superb save from Richard Morales the best of some great stops.
The Socceroos had few chances of their own but Mark Viduka and Jason Culina both went close after the break.
