David James, Paul Konchesky, Wayne Bridge and Michael Carrick have all been recalled to the England squad for the friendly against Argentina. Sven-Goran Eriksson's side take on Argentina in Geneva on 12 November and the Swede will take the opportunity to look at some fringe players.
Jonathan Woodgate, who was expected to be named in the party, was not picked.
Woodgate was injured on Sunday playing for Real Madrid, although it is unclear whether he would have been selected.
The centre-back came off after 23 minutes of Real's match against Real Zaragoza on Sunday with a hamstring problem - the latest in a nightmare string of injuries.
He last played for England in March 2004, against Sweden.
Goalkeeper James has not been involved since being dropped after his poor display as a second-half substitute in the friendly against Denmark in August.
He now returns as experienced back-up to Tottenham's Paul Robinson, with the youthful Robert Green of Norwich the other keeper in the squad.
With Ashley Cole injured, Bridge, who rarely plays for club side Chelsea, and West Ham's Konchesky get the opportunity to put their case for being the back-up left-back at next summer's World Cup in Germany.
Tottenham's Ledley King, a defender at club level, is included and is expected to retain his place in central midfield for this friendly after performing well against Poland.
Spurs colleague Carrick will also hope to try out for that role.
At centre-back, Eriksson must once more choose two players from the big three of John Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Sol Campbell.
Eriksson gave his backing to Ferdinand over the weekend but warned the Manchester United defender he is no longer an automatic choice.
"I am not worried about Rio, for me he is the most complete central defender in this country," Eriksson said.
"But I have never said he will be my first choice because we have Campbell, Terry, Woodgate King and Carragher.
"It might be that all of them will go to the World Cup. I have not decided who is going to play central defence against Argentina.
"I will make that decision when all the players come together and I see how they are."
