Captain Kenny Cunningham has said that his Republic of Ireland career is over after the country's failure to qualify for the World Cup finals. The 34-year-old said after Wednesday's draw with Switzerland: "It is the end of the road for me, without a doubt.
"I don't want to dwell on it too much on what is a hugely disappointing night for the entire group," added the Birmingham City defender.
Roy Keane and a number of other players may also retire from Republic duty.
Matt Holland acknowledged that he will not have another chance to play in a World Cup finals.
"At the start of the next campaign I'll be 32, and by the time the European Championships come round I'll be 34," said Holland.
"I don't know. It's a little bit premature to be thinking about it at this precise moment. I'll have to sit back and think about that one."
