The Republic of Ireland's World Cup campaign ended when they were held 0-0 at home by Switzerland to finish fourth in their qualifying group. The result was enough to give the Swiss the runners-up spot in Group Four so they go into Friday's play-off draw.
Ian Harte missed a great chance with an early header but after that the Republic created few opportunities.
Alexander Frei missed Switzerland's best chances - an early header wide and a late run blocked by Shay Given.
It was a night of frustration and disappointment for the Republic who reached the last 16 in the last World Cup.
They knew a winning goal would probably see them into the play-offs but, despite lots of possession, failed to seriously test Pascal Zuberbuhler.
As the game wore on, the Lansdowne Road crowd began to get anxious.
Irish boss Kerr made his first switch with 25 minutes to go, Stephen Elliott replacing Robbie Keane in the Irish attack.
Steven Reid and Gary Doherty were also brought on in an attempt to make things happen.
But that crucial goal just would not come and Ireland made their exit.
The outcome is likely to lead to speculation about the future of manager Brian Kerr whose contract ended along with Ireland's qualification hopes.
