Luiz Felipe Scolari is unlikely to stay on as Portugal coach after the 2006 World Cup, according to the president of the Portuguese Football Association. Gilberto Madail told the Correio de Manha newspaper: "If the World Cup goes badly, Scolari will not continue.
"But if it goes well, it would be impossible to keep him, although we would want to."
Scolari led Brazil to World Cup victory in 2002 and guided Portugal to the Euro 2004 final, where they lost to Greece.
Portugal clinched their place in next summer's finals in Germany with a 2-1 win over Liechtenstein at the weekend and Madail added: "If it was up to me, Scolari would stay."
With a record of eight wins and three draws from their 11 games, they will be looking to round off an unbeaten qualifying campaign against Latvia on Wednesday.
Portugal are currently top scorers among the European qualifiers, with 32 goals and having leaked only five.
