Paul Robinson: Tipped a speculative shot over the bar early on. Was beaten once but saved by the woodwork.

Luke Young: Sound positional sense, rescued England with a covering header with his centre-backs beaten.

Sol Campbell: Lacked authority and, with Terry, sat back too much and allowed Austria time and space.

John Terry: Wayward header led to Austria's Linz hitting the bar. Was nowhere near his imperious best.

Jamie Carragher: Unfussy display, no glaring errors but no eye-catching moments either - steady.

David Beckham: Harshly dismissed for two cautions. However, was only mildly effective in the first half.

Steven Gerrard: Tenacious, disciplined but too often too deep. Showed he can hurt teams when coming forward.

Frank Lampard: Perfect start to his new role as penalty taker and made a chance for Owen but not involved enough.

Joe Cole: Direct, creative and prepared to take on his man. Very unfortunate to be replaced by King.

Peter Crouch: Mixed touch and wasted a good chance when allowed a free header in the penalty area.

Michael Owen: Aggressive and intelligent running, won England's penalty and should have been awarded another.

Substitutes

Ledley King (replaced J Cole, 62 mins): Seemed to play in a no-man's zone in front of the back four. Not bad.

Rio Ferdinand (replaced Campbell, 65 mins): Assured and composed. Stayed calm as England increasingly panicked.

Kieran Richardson (replaced Owen, 82mins): Little time to make an impact, but looked nervous with his few touches.
