Aston Villa defender Liam Ridgewell has been forced out of the England Under-21 squad because of a knee injury. Ridgewell was assessed by England's medical staff before being sent back to the Midlands club.
West Brom defender Curtis Davies has now been drafted into the squad for two European Championship qualifiers.
England face Austria at Elland Road on Friday and they complete their Group Six fixtures at Hillsborough four days later against Poland.
England are already guaranteed a play-off match in November in a bid to reach next year's finals, with the hosts to be decided when the line-up is known.
