Tommy Doherty won nine caps for N Ireland |
Queen's Park Rangers midfielder Tommy Doherty has informed Northern Ireland boss Lawrie Sanchez that he no longer wants to play international football. The former Bristol City player was not included in the squad for the recent World Cup qualifying wins over Azerbaijan and England.
The 26-year-old, who won nine caps, has decided to concentrate on his club career at Loftus Road.
"Tommy said that international football just isn't for him," said Sanchez.
"I had a good chat with him but unfortunately he has decided that he doesn't want to play international football any more and I have to respect that.
"Tommy is a quiet lad and being stuck in a hotel for nine or ten days with a group of people you don't know particularly well isn't an easy environment for everyone.
"He played well for me when I could actually get him into a squad.
"I wasn't sure how strong his commitment was and I've always said that players have to be committed if they want to play for Northern Ireland, otherwise they are no good to me," added the Northern Ireland manager.
Doherty qualified to play for N Ireland through the grandparent rule and made his debut in a friendly against Italy in 2003.
He made his mark with an impressive display in a 0-0 draw with Spain in June 2003, under Sammy McIlroy, and started in the 4-0 defeat by England at Old Trafford in March.
