 | He can't play out wide because he hasn't got the legs ... and he can't play as the midfield holding player |
Former England captain Terry Butcher has defended his criticism of David Beckham after being labelled "sad" for questioning his recent performances. Beckham was furious after Butcher said he was not sure he had the stamina to compete at the highest level.
BBC pundit Butcher said: "I said one or two things about him and David has responded with one or two things about me. It's part and parcel of football.
"But we both want the same thing in the end and that's a winning England team."
Beckham was also upset with another BBC football expert, Alan Hansen, who insists the Real Madrid star was not being used to best advantage by England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson in a midfield holding role.
But Butcher told BBC Radio Five Live: "We have been saying this for some time. He can't play out wide because he hasn't got the legs to go out there.
"And he can't play as the midfield holding player because he hasn't got the legs to go forward or scamper across the front on his back four.
"There is no denying he's a fantastic passer of the ball and given time and space he will pick out a target 99 times out of 100."
