Franz Beckenbauer has insisted hooligansm will not hit the 2006 World Cup after the latest outbreak of fan violence involving German supporters.

Around 500 German fans tried to force their way out of the stands after Germany were beaten 2-0 in Slovakia.

President of the 2006 organising committee Franz Beckenbauer told Bild newspaper: "Our security forces will have (the hooligans) in their grasp."

In March there was trouble involving German fans in Slovenia.

An estimated 200 hooligans rampaged in Celje, smashing windows and damaging cars before and after the game, which Germany won 1-0.

Germany's Football Association (DFB) apologised for Saturday's violence.

"That is unfortunate and deplorable. It shows Germany in a bad light," DFB co-president Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder said in Bratislava after the friendly. "We can only be ashamed, and apologise."

Hooliganism continues to be a major problem in German football, mainly in the lower leagues.
