Raymond Domenech has been appointed France's national team coach, replacing Jacques Santini who stood down after Euro 2004 to join Spurs. A former French international defender, Domenech, 52, coached Lyon between 1989 and 1994, before joining the national set-up, the coaching Under-21 side.
He led the U-21s to the semi-finals of the European Championship in 1994 and 1996 and to the final in 2002.
Laurent Blanc and Jean Tigana had also been on the Federation's shortlist.
Domenech made his debut as professional with his home-town club Lyon in 1969, where he won the French Cup in 1973.
Four years later he joined Racing Strasbourg, a club he won a French league championship with in 1979.
Domenech also played for Paris St Germain, where he also won a French Cup in 1982, as well as Bordeaux.
Playing under current French technical director Aime Jacquet, Domenech won a second French league championship title at Bordeaux, before ending his playing career because of a knee injury
In 1985 he became coach of second division Mulhouse, four years later taking charge of Lyon, who he led from the second division to qualification for the European Cup.
