Keane downbeat after Republic win

A man-of-the-match award did little to change Roy Keane's downbeat assessment of the Republic of Ireland's display in the 2-0 win over the Faroe Islands.

"The most important thing was to get the win but the second half performance was poor enough," said Keane, after Wednesday's World Cup qualifier.

"We over-complicated things in the second half, trying to find the killer pass instead of keeping possession.

"I suppose a win is a win but we still have a long way to go in the group."

While his namesake was unimpressed with Ireland's display, Robbie Keane described becoming the country's record goalscorer as a "a dream come true".

"Since I was a kid I have wanted to score goals and play for my country," said the Tottenham striker, which brought his tally up to 23, two ahead of Niall Quinn.

"Niall has been tremendous since I came into the squad when I was 17.

"He always looked after me and was a pleasure to play with."

Brian Kerr's men should have won the World Cup qualifying game by a bigger margin but Keane said: "It's important we got the three points after our good result against France on Saturday.

"We had a few chances and maybe we could have got a few more goals - but maybe we are keeping them for the next game."

Irish manager Brian Kerr said he was happy with his team's overall performance - but disappointed with the finishing.

"We had enough chances and we missed them but that's how it goes," said Kerr.

"We've now won two home games and drawn two away games so it's been a good start for us.

A more than satisfactory start

"The players have worked very hard and done what they were asked to do."

As for record-breaker Keane, Kerr added: "It's been inevitable for a good while now that he would get the record.

"He gets in good positions and could have had more in the second half.

"It's been a great night for him and having done it at such a young age is fantastic for him - I think there's more to come from him as he matures.

"We took a risk going to France and Switzerland early on and we've got rewarded.

"I'd say I think it's a very good start indeed for us, a more than satisfactory start."
