England player ratings
Marks out of 10 for England after their World Cup qualifier in Azerbaijan.

England

Paul Robinson - 7: Only called into action once, making an unorthodox stop, giving him another deserved clean sheet.

Gary Neville - 7: Used all his experience to stifle Kamal Guliyev on the right but could not threaten in attack.

Sol Campbell - 8 (STAR MAN): An imperious presence. Kept Aliyev shackled throughout and never looked troubled.

Rio Ferdinand - 7: Cool and calm at the back and was able to bring the ball out of defence effectively.

Ashley Cole - 7: Given acres of space on the left to get forward. Kept Shukorov quiet down his flank too.

Jermaine Jenas - 6: Made a nervy start but grew in confidence and played his part in a tidy midfield display.

Nicky Butt - 6: Steadied the ship in midfield. Happy to see others go forward while staying deep.

Frank Lampard - 7: Covered a lot of ground in the middle of the park and helped keep England on the front foot.

Wayne Rooney - 7: Had to cope with close attentions of Kerimov and also found himself defending deep on occasions but remained a constant threat.

Jermain Defoe - 5: Could not impose himself on the game and was often hustled out of possession. The least effective of the strikers and replaced early.

Michael Owen - 7: Took his goal well but had two other clear chances at the beginning and end of the game without managing a shot on target.

Substitutes

Alan Smith (Replaced Defoe, 55 minutes) - 6: Brought on to add more presence up front and did his job in solid fashion.

Shaun Wright-Phillips (Replaced Jenas, 72 minutes) - 6: Stretched the Azeris' defence when given the ball and supplied one telling cross in the dying seconds.

Joe Cole (Replaced Rooney, 85 minutes) - 5: Had a late chance in front of goal but otherwise saw little of the ball.
