Jose Pekerman has been appointed the new coach of Argentina. Pekerman, 55 was offered the post after Carlos Bianchi turned down the Argentina Football Association's offer as it sought to replace Marcelo Bielsa.
"I'm very flattered that they thought of me," said Pekerman, who led Argentina to the world youth titles in 1997, 1999 and 2001
The vacancy arose when Bielsa resigned on Tuesday, having guided Argentina to their first Olympic title.
Bielsa left saying he had run out of energy after six years in the high-pressure job.
Bianchi, who resigned from his post as Boca Juniors coach in July citing family reasons, has never enjoyed close relations with Julio Grondona, the Argentina Football Association president.
