England keeper David James has accepted the blame for Austria's second goal in the 2-2 World Cup qualifying draw. James allowed Andreas Ivanschitz's shot to slip straight through him as Austria hit back from 2-0 down in Vienna.
"You have to be mentally tough. I'm not going to make out that it was anyone else's fault but, at the same time, I'm not going to hang myself," he said.
"We were comfortable. The free-kick should not have changed the game but the equaliser cost us three points."
Jamed added: "The shot took a little deflection and it slightly put me in the wrong position. It's something that I'm not entirely happy with.
"You prepare for these things not to happen, but they sometimes do."
Asked if he had apologised to his team-mates, James stated: "It's a team game.
"When you do good things, you take the praise. When things go badly, you share the grief."
England captain David Beckham backed James to put the error behind him.
"He realises he made a mistake but these things happen in football," Beckham told BBC Five Live.
"Everybody makes mistakes and it is how you get over them that counts. I have no doubt David will get over it."
