Fortune did not face his Man Utd team-mates |
Quinton Fortune's failure to answer his mobile phone cost him a part playing for South Africa in the country's international friendly against England on Thursday. Fortune was left out of the original squad picked by Ephraim Mashaba, who subsequently questioned the desire of certain overseas players to play for South Africa.
Mashaba left out Fortune, Lucas Radebe, Shaun Bartlett and Benni McCarthy.
He was relieved of coaching duties for the game last Sunday and replaced with Jomo Sono as South Africa's temporary coach.
Sono picked the four omitted players in his squad and, while Radebe, Bartlett and McCarthy played at some part during the match, Fortune could not be reached.
"He is hurt and angry about what was said about him and we tried everything to get hold of him," said Sono.
"We called his mother, his brother, even (former South African coach) Carlos Queiroz at Manchester United but he kept his mobile phone off."
He added: "He was laughing and joking with Beckham and the other Man United guys in training in the weeks before the match, teasing each other about the result of the international," said Sono.
"Then when he was left out of the team, he was shattered and just switched his phone off."
