Jim Gannon's first match in charge of Port Vale ended in defeat as Burnley coasted into round four of the FA Cup.
Clarke Carlisle headed Burnley in front from a Chris Eagles cross early on, but Robert Taylor levelled from six yards.
A 20-yard Tyrone Mears free-kick restored the lead for the Clarets, and soon after the break Jack Cork squared for Eagles to smash home the third.
Graham Alexander scored from the spot after Lee Collins fouled Mears, before Taylor tapped in a consolation rebound.
After Burnley's fast start, Vale, one of only six sides from the fourth tier still alive at the third round stage, equalised with virtually their first attack.
Lewis Haldane floated a ball across the six-yard box and after the home defence failed to clear, Taylor got the slightest of touches past the wrong-footed Lee Grant.
Burnley, 42 rungs above their opponents on the league ladder, went ahead again when the set-piece from Mears crept past Stuart Tomlinson.
After the impressive Eagles gave the home side a two-goal cushion, Tomlinson had to be alert to make a sprawling save from Jay Rodriquez.
The visitors kept pressing, with Gary Roberts racing clear and lifting the ball over Grant only to see it landing on the roof of the net.
Alexander stepped up to score his 21st penalty from 22 attempts and although Taylor pounced after Grant had parried Sean Rigg's shot, it was not going to prevent caretaker boss Stuart Gray guiding Burnley into Sunday's draw.
