Adam Lallana scored one goal and set up two more as Southampton comfortably saw off League Two side Cheltenham to reach the FA Cup third round.
Lallana put the Saints ahead when he swept home Ryan Dickson's low cross and Guly Do Prado doubled the advantage, heading in Lallana's powerful centre.
Cheltenham rarely threatened and a scuffed David Bird effort was the closest they came.
Oscar Gobern's looping header completed the scoring and a deserved win late on.
Southampton boss Nigel Adkins told BBC Radio Solent: "Things weren't going as well as we'd like, we had several changes where we had to make all the substitutions at half-time.
"We're in the hat, we've scored three goals, kept a clean sheet and we'll move on from that.
"(on Adam Lallana) - He's got a great attitude, a great enthusiasm to play football and I've been very impressed with him since I've been here."
Cheltenham Town manager Mark Yates told BBC Radio Gloucestershire: "They've got good players but we started both halves poorly and it cost us.
"We were not quite as good as we have been recently but I'm proud of the work the players have put in and I'm proud of some of the stuff we played.
"I hope we've given the supporters something to shout about. It was a great place to come, but we were the masters of our downfall today."
