Richards' winner was his third goal in four games for the Valiants

Justin Richards' first-half goal was enough to see off Accrington Stanley and earn Port Vale a first FA Cup third-round place for five seasons.

The visitors started the tie strongly before Richards sent Rob Taylor's header into the roof of the net.

Both sides went close as Vale's John McCombe and then Ray Putterill both hit the woodwork before half-time.

Accrington fought back after the break and only a goal-line clearance of Chris Turner's shot denied them a replay.

Port Vale boss Micky Adams told BBC Radio Stoke:
"I'm delighted that we're in the hat, so let's hope we get a plum tie and get out of the third round what we all want.

"We've got a fantastic squad and the team have worked really hard for that result tonight, first half especially we played really well.

"People say will it be a distraction, well I don't see it as that but I would prefer one of the big guns".
