Basingstoke Town out to cause FA Cup upset

Basingstoke Town

Basingstoke Town manager Frank Gray thinks they can cause an upset against AFC Wimbledon in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round next Saturday.

He told BBC Radio Berkshire: "We've got an opportunity. If we put in the performance that I know we can do then we can cause them problems.

"It's proven year in and year out that in the FA Cup the smaller clubs can beat the bigger clubs."

Basingstoke beat Didcot Town 4-0 in the previous round last Saturday.

The Blues sit 15th in the Blue Square Bet South with only three wins in their opening 10 games.

Gray believes their frustrating start to the season can be put to bed with a good run in the FA Cup.

"It'll give us a kick-start. The cup has given us a confidence boost," he said. "But that wont be anything like what it will feel like to beat a higher league club like Wimbledon."

However Gray is under no illusions to how difficult it will be to overcome Blue Square Bet Premier side Wimbledon.

"They are flying high in the Conference," he said. "So they'll certainly be up for it and they'll be taking the cup seriously."
