Guildford City eye history in the FA Cup

Guildford City are aiming to make history when they play Clevedon Town in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

The Combined Counties League side have not reached the third qualifying stage since the club reformed in 1996.

Manager Kevin Rayner told BBC Surrey: "It's a tough game but we've certainly got the squad good enough to progress even further.

"Both sides will think they've got a good chance to go through."

City are unbeaten in 11 games since the start of the season and Rayner is keen to capitalise on home advantage at the 1,000 capacity Spectrum stadium.

"They're higher than us in the pyramid but we've got players who've played at a good level to be confident of going through," he said.

"We've got a fantastic home record and it's a fairly daunting place to come and play football for some opposition.

"We must have a slight advantage."

The previous incarnation of Guildford City reached the Second Round proper six times during the course of their history before the club's demise in 1974.

Rayner is aware of the prestige associated with progress in the competition.

"It means so much for everybody at the club from the committee all the way down to the people helping to put the corner flags out," he said.

"It's a chance to get a bit of recognition and it's a fantastic day for the club at our level.

"Everybody, all the players are looking forward to it."
