Paul Hayes scored the only goal as Scunthorpe reached round four of the FA Cup with victory over Barnsley.
The home side's Garry Thompson saw a strike deflected just wide and Stephen Foster might have put Barnsley in front but headed straight at Josh Lillis.
Hayes got what proved to be the winner by tucking home from 12 yards after Jonathan Forte's right-wing cross.
Striker Daniel Bogdanovic spurned a chance to restore parity when he placed a right-footed shot wide of the target.
Barnsley manager Mark Robins told BBC Radio Sheffield:
"I said before the game we would like a Cup run, but it wasn't to be, I suppose.
"Coming into this we have been on a good run, but unfortunately for us we didn't really start the game. Having said that we could have got something, won the game.
"We were a bit below the standards today and got everything we deserved."
